Pre-prohibition cocktails and modern twists on classics

Eeyore’s Requiem

    Ingredients:

    1.5oz Campari

    .5oz Gin

    .25oz Cynar

    .25oz Fernet Branca

    1oz Dolin Blanc Vermouth

    15 drops Orange bitters

    3 Orange twists

    Instructions:

Add the Orange Bitters, Campari, Fernet Branca, Cynar and Gin to a mixing glass. Add ice and stir. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Express the oils from the three orange twists then discard them.

    Notes:

An amazing bitter cocktail by Toby Maloney for the Violet Hour in Chicago. This one will certainly appeal to fans of the Negroni as well as those who enjoy amari. While Eeyore’s Requiem does contain a small amount of gin, Campari actually acts as the base spirit. The bitter, herbal accents from the Cynar and Fernet add complexity to the Campari, while the botanicals in the gin layer into Eeyore’s unique flavor. The white, sweet Dolin Blanc helps counterbalance all the bitter amari. The orange bitters and orange twists further accentuate the orange citrus brought by the Campari. This is an amazing, complex, yet light cocktail that makes a great aperitif. A new classic, Eeyore’s Requiem is highly recommended.

[…] My hope is for The Straight Up to be as much for folks more experienced, looking for something off the beaten path as for those new to cocktails. In a sense, to have something for everyone, educating new folks about classic drinks, spirits, techniques, etc, as well as providing some recipe, which whether classic or new, would appeal to those looking for something a bit different. The last thing I want to do is to turn off readers who are just getting into cocktails by the complexity and shopping trip required to make a drink like The Bittersweet Garden or Eeyore’s Requiem.
